Chapter 19

June 10

Valerie stared at the television screen and smiled while listening to the announcement today was England’s Prince Philip’s birthday. And he turned ninety-nine years old.

“Wow,” she exclaimed, pointing at the screen. “Look at him, Derek. Ninety-nine. And so dapper, dressed in that blue suit and red-striped tie for the new official photograph with the queen.”

“Dapper?” Derek chuckled at the old-fashioned word.

“First word that popped into my mind when I saw their photograph.” Valerie chuckled. “But nothing more appropriate fits. Can you imagine living to ninety-nine?”

“Possible with today’s advances in health care, providing they get a handle on all these coronavirus outbreaks.” He continued working on his laptop as he spoke.

“I wonder if Grandma will make ninety-nine. That’s only eleven years from now.” She chuckled. “Of course, Dad will be disappointed if he doesn’t make it to one hundred at least. He’s worked hard all his life and saved for his retirement. Now he intends to live long enough to spend every penny.”

Derek looked up at her. “With the economy as it is, prices are bound to increase. He might not make one hundred before the cash runs out.”

“Don’t ever mention such a thing to Dad.” Valerie wagged a finger at him.

“I’m thankful he realized your grandmother was joking about us getting married.” Derek held up his hand, using the Boy Scout’s three-finger salute. “I’m not mentioning anything to him, ever.”

“Good.” Valerie closed her laptop. Now she’d learned Derek had been a Boy Scout. The revelations about each other continued daily. “I’m bored.”

“Why don’t we venture out to the park today?” Derek closed his laptop and stood. “It’s been close to a month since Phase One started. All the crazies you were concerned about back in mid-May must have freedom out of their system by now.”

“And I’ll bet a few of them have tested positive also as a result of it,” she speculated. “The weather is pleasantly warmer, but with all the pockets of rainy weather, perhaps we’d best go while the going is good.” Her nervousness at the prospect of stepping out of her comfortable cocoon continued, but she grabbed her coat out of the closet and accompanied Derek out the front door.

She paused on the top step and inhaled the fresh air. “We should open the windows more often and let in clean air and force out the stale.”

“Good idea except on lawn cutting day,” Derek agreed. “Not wearing a mask?”

“No. I’ll social distance and enjoy the fresh air.”

“Good for you.” Derek reached for her hand.

Valerie wondered if he was experiencing similar feeling for her as she’d been attempting to convince herself she wasn’t harboring for him. Or was hand-holding a silent message to others that the two of them self-isolate together and distancing wasn’t required?

They wandered throughout the neighborhood, intent on reaching the park. Valerie smiled at a couple of little girls wearing pretty pink dresses. The sisters were racing around, playing at the playground while their mother kept a careful watch on the youngsters, reminding them occasionally to not interact with other children situated nearby.
